A Guide to Selecting the Perfect Flooring

HomeBlogA Guide to Selecting the Perfect Flooring

It wasn’t nearly as challenging to select flooring back when there weren’t very many options. Today, there are practically unlimited choices, including hardwood, laminate, sheet vinyl, tile, LVT/LVP, and carpet. It doesn’t have to be an overwhelming experience, however, because once you break it down into four things to consider, you’ll have the flooring that suits your needs before you know it.

A Guide to Selecting the Perfect Flooring

  • Appearance – Let’s face it– rarely do we consider replacing a floor with the exact same style. It’s fun to mix it up and elevate the appearance of the room by choosing something new and exciting. It is also just as likely that your current flooring isn’t providing the effect you want. For example, if you want to make a small space appear larger, use light colors. Dark-colored flooring can be used to add sophistication. Think about whether you lean more to the rich grains of wood or the plushness of a luxuriously thick carpet and if you like neutral colors or something bold.
  • Space – The location of the flooring also dictates what the perfect floor would be. Consider the size and shape of the room and how much natural light pours in, as well as what the space is used for.
  • Materials Flooring materials range from budget to luxury, so considering your budget at the onset is important. However, don’t forget that your flooring choice can add or even detract from the value of the home based on current trends. The closer you are to selling, the more you’ll want to pay attention to that. You should also consider materials that have a maintenance schedule you can live with. Some require very little, and others are more involved. Finally, consider how the flooring will feel underfoot and how important that is to you.
  • Practicality – The functionality of your flooring is an important consideration. You’ll need to factor in your lifestyle, whether the area gets a lot of foot traffic or rubbing of chairs or other furniture, if you need pet-friendly options, how wet the area could be (kitchens, baths, and laundry areas need water-resistance or waterproof flooring, for example), and how durable you want the flooring to be overall.
